Watching my Weight

Today I’m starting Weight Watchers. (She sighs.)

I’m sure I’m one of two million and twelve women starting Weight Watchers in this new year, especially since Jennifer Hudson’s success with the program, but for me this is huge. This is the first time I’ve ever tried a formal diet. I’ve done plenty of diets that I concocted on my own — such as my soup, salad, and oatmeal diet I used to lose weight before my wedding. But this is the first time I’ve tried a diet that has a registered name.
I’ve always shunned diets like Atkins and South Beach because a) I’m impossible to live with if I haven’t had carbs and b) I believe that, with a few exceptions, the weight loss from these diets is temporary. My hope is that Weight Watchers will do more than just help me lose weight, but will also teach me to eat healthier and more balanced meals so that I will be able to maintain my new weight.
My goal is to return to the weight of 140 pounds, which is what I weighed when I looked and felt my best. In addition to changing my diet I’m also going to focus on making my body stronger by not only attending my favorite aerobic classes at the gym, but also incorporating weight lifting into my exercise regimen.
Above all, I have to stay true to my commitment to practice positive self-talk about my body. That means phrases like “I’m a fat ass” and “I’m such a cow” are now off limits. If you’re reading this and you’re my friend I expect you to hold me to this. Meanwhile, I’ll occasionally update you all on my progress (because I know you’ll be sitting on the edge of your sits waiting for it).
What are you doing to promote a healthier lifestyle for yourself this year?

  1. Jai, I will definitely hold you to the positive talk! 🙂 As for me, I am dedicating myself to a healthier lifestyle this year as well. The biggest thing is that I am working on a lifestyle so that it is not a fad and fly by night, just as you are doing as well. I plan to cook more, because when I do that, I eat healthier and I control what goes in to my food. I also plan to eat more fresh fruits and veggies and I will do that by shopping at the local farmer’s market and by growing a few things myself. Also, I’m going to work out with a trainer at least twice a week and go to the gym on my own as well. I also plan to pray more and have quiet time so that my mind doesn’t run at 100 miles per hour like it usually does so that I can have peace of mind. And of course, gotta add more water! Lastly, I’m planning to do a vision board, inclusive of positive affirmations, regarding my health in hopes that seeing it will help me stay on track and focused on my goals.

  2. Arnita, I’m writing a post about vision boards for Friday. Stay tuned!

  3. Hey, I started WW in December. It’s the second time I’ve done it and it really does work, and teaches you a lot about what you eat. (I quit the first time because I got pregnant and decided it was license to eat everything in my path.)

WW isn’t really a diet to me. I think of it as a program to hold me accountable for, say, eating an entire block of cheese in one sitting.

I’m 10 pounds down so far, and feeling tons better. The biggest help I can offer is to stay away from those heat-up frozen boxes whenever you can. They are easy to take for lunches, but you will get so sick of them and get fed up. Utilize the recipes on the WW site. We’ve been eating some really fantastic meals lately — all WW recipes.

Also, I noticed the biggest difference in energy levels after cutting out processed foods. When you eat fresh foods, you feel soooooo much better, for real.

    Good luck!! 🙂 Love you!
