Help Us Name The Most Underrated Christmas Songs Of All Time

Capitalism is something else, playa.

Only in America will you hear Christmas music while shopping for Halloween costumes. It’s like the country can’t WAIT to slap you in the face with “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.”

Not in my household, homie. The Christmas season starts after the Thanksgiving meal has been put away, and not a second earlier. And since we’ve all digested all those Patti LaBelle pies and deep fried turkeys, we can now turn our attention to those songs that put us in the holiday spirit.

This year, we wanna hear what’s on your playlists.

During the month of December at Soul In Stereo, we feature 25 Christmas songs leading up to the big day. But instead of rehashing classics like Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas,” Boyz II Men’s “Let It Snow” and The Temptation’s “Silent Night,” we’re going to highlight those underrated gems under your tree — the songs that stir warm holiday memories for you, yet aren’t constantly being played while you wander through Target.

Share your favorite underrated Christmas classics on our Facebook page, hit me up on Twitter@etbowser, email a brother at soulinstereoblog@gmail.com or leave ’em in the comments below. We’ll feature the songs throughout the month.

Stop by Dec. 1 and help us create new Christmas memories.

  1. Edd,

You know how I feel about that sweet soul music (and Soul in Stereo) and my man Otis. I don’t think you can get much better than when Mr. Redding turned his vocal chords toward the Christmas season:

“Merry Christmas Baby” https://youtu.be/Zpzty172gtM (what a gem)
    “White Christmas” https://youtu.be/uwCcVRH8idA

And then James Brown’s album is always playing at this ol’ dude’s house. You see, I need that Go Power at Christmas time: https://youtu.be/EqwrYV0QlbY

And finally, but not at all lastly, “Christmas In Hollis” from my youth by the Rev Run and ’em: https://youtu.be/OR07r0ZMFb8

  2. “Sleigh Ride” & “My Gift to You” by Alexander O’Neal. I’m his #1 fan! Vanessa Williams killed “What Child is This!” and the BEST, Denise Montana “Merry Christmas All!”

  3. I love non-traditional Christmas songs. Here’s a playlist of some lesser-known Christmas music: https://open.spotify.com/user/qaz23/playlist/22Hs4AlaOFExwI0cOEBHSj
