Flashback Friday: Rick Ross and Trick Daddy

You know, I’m in mood to hear some Southern rap today. But instead of the usual suspects, I programmed Florida into my GPS. Here are a couple of spitters from the Sunshine State.

Rick Ross, Port of Miami (2006)

I give ol’ Rawse a hard time these days (and deservedly so) but at the start of his career he wasn’t so bad. Ricky’s debut yielded strong singles and showed lots of potential. When he’s focused – and not rhyming about Wing Stop every other bar – he’s tolerable.

Trick Daddy, Thug Holiday (2002)

Trick Daddy Dollars was at the height of his mainstream success in 2002 and Thug Holiday was a surprisingly well-rounded album. Yeah, it has the usual debauchery but it also includes socially conscious tracks as well. Yep, T-Double could get pretty deep when he wasn’t chasing strippers.
