Love Letters: If You Dislike Your Engagement Ring Should You Just Buy Another?

Man, I might have to start cranking out Love Letters columns twice a week. Y’all are loading me down with questions.

Don’t trip if I haven’t gotten to yours yet. Sit tight, it’s coming.

Before we get into today’s drama, here’s how you can contribute.

Here’s today’s question:

If a woman is given an engagement right and it is not to her liking, is it cool for her to buy the one she wants?

DW

Lord….

I’m gonna behave. We just celebrated Martin Luther The King Day so I’m still in the spirit of supporting my community.

For now anyway.

About this ring thing, some of you ladies get way too caught up in the material, not the meaning. An engagement ring isn’t your chance to get iced out. It is supposed to be a symbol of everlasting love.

A woman once told me that an engagement ring is payment – yes, PAYMENT – for a lifetime of marriage. If homie was just going to pay for marriage, he should have gotten one of those mail-order brides from a foreign country. At least then he wouldn’t be able to comprehend the stupid things his wife says.

But back to the ring. Now if your ring looks like this, yeah, give it back:

Otherwise, get over it.

I suggest that couples go ring shopping ahead of time so guys can learn exactly what their ladies like. When I was ready to buy my future wife’s ring I brought her friend to the shop with me for her guidance. That worked well.

The real lesson here is that an engagement ring isn’t just a piece of jewelry for you to flaunt. It’s a symbol of a lifetime bond that represents unity through good and bad times. If you can’t get over how your ring looks, your marriage is already off on the wrong foot.

If I haven’t lost all my single ladies, here’s Question No. 2:

Why is it harder for a man to forgive a women when she cheats but a woman can forgive a man for cheating easily?

KJ

To quote a phrase I heard often while living in Louisville: You done made that up.

I’m sure you asked that question based on your personal experience. But from my experience women are much more intolerant of a man cheating. It’s like they can’t WAIT to get their Madea on.

This is why Tyler Perry is ruining our society.

In the cases of the guys I know who “forgave” women for indiscretions, they didn’t really “forgive” the woman, they just held it over their ladies head like the Sword of Damocles (Google it, people).

I’ve said it here countless times, I don’t believe that “once a DAWG always a DAWG” nonsense. People can change if they really want to. It’s no shame in showing someone forgiveness, just make sure you really are forgiving them and not throwing their mistakes around whenever you get caught up in some dirt yourself.
