Flashback Friday: Ab-Soul and Soul For Real
This Friday, we shout out artists whose names are synonymous with soul.
Treat yourself to some good music before the weekend hits.
Ab-Soul, Control System (2012)
Kendrick Lamar’s TDE conglomerate might be the hottest crew in hip hop right now. While most fans are enamored with K Dot’s starpower, Jay Rock’s street appeal and Schoolboy Q’s, uh, pharmaceutical tales, Ab-Soul is the real linchpin of the group. His 2012 album is his best work by far, showing that there is a real philosopher lurking behind those clouds of weed smoke. The experience is much deeper and more thought-provoking than you’d expect.

Soul For Real, Candy Rain (1995)
Not only did the great Heavy D bless us with classic rap tracks, he introduced lots of new talent to the R&B game. His most memorable find might be the boys from Soul For Real, who cranked out feel-good soul tracks that had kids boo’d up at skating rinks across the nation.
