Flashback Friday: Patti LaBelle and Maria

Last week spoiled us – this has felt like the longest week ever. Let’s embrace the return of an old friend – the weekend.

Edward gets in the Christmas spirit:

Patti LaBelle, This Christmas (1990)

Edd said: Poor, poor Javacia. Eleven months of the year, she’s forced to hear me constantly ranting about how ‘the man’ is holding down Keith Sweat and how I plan to hunt down Biggie Smalls’ murderer. But in December I turn into Patti’s biggest fan. I know every song on this album word for word and (screeching) note for note. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard me recite Patti’s bossy lyrics at insane decibels. For example, on her cover of the title track, she screams: ‘WHY DO YOU SHAKE SOMEBOD-DAY’S HAND!?!?!? SHAKE A HAND, SHAKE A HAND FOR YO BRUUUUUUTHA MAN!” Yep, Christmas begins when Patti yells through my house. Best Christmas album EVER.

Poor, poor Javacia.

Javacia’s listening to much calmer tunes this weekend:

Maria, My Soul (2003)

Javacia said: I never understood why Maria never made it big in the music industry. She has a great voice, she’s beautiful, and she sang about the one thing we can all relate to: heartbreak. Maria had some success with her first single, “I Give, You Take,” but after the release of her debut album My Soul her record company failed to promote a second single and soon dropped her from the label. But I still love you, Maria.
