Flashback Friday: Heavy D & the Boyz and Teedra Moses

To celebrate Labor Day weekend, we have some great cuts to play at your cookout.

Georgia Mae fan Diane Hawkins takes us back:

Heavy D & the Boyz, Peaceful Journey (1991)

Diane said: In 1991, Heavy D and the Boyz dropped “Peaceful Journey.”  Arguably, the best hit on the album is  “Now That We’ve Found Love” which samples reggae band Third World’s title cut.

Even to this day, when I’m listening to the Hevster’s “diddley, diddley, diddley”  diddy, I try to go rhyme for rhyme on that song.  It’s impossible! The song always puts me in a good mood, too. But, here are the block of lyrics that Heavy D raps on the “Love” song:  “Harmony, charm of me/Your fingertips are callin me/When you drop me kisses/You’re so cute you drop the bomb on me.”

Heavy D’s “Love” is just one of many songs that set the bar for quick-spittin’ rappers.

Here’s what Edward is listening to:

Teedra Moses, Complex Simplicity (2004)

Edd said: During the dying days of BET’s Midnight Love video show, we were introduced to R&B siren Teedra Moses. Sadly, her style of R&B (you know, the good kind) became passe’ around that time, so she fell into obscurity. Thankfully she left this gem before vanishing. Complex Simplicity is a mix of 90s soul and 80s funk – giving it the feel of a bygone era. Just picture Toni Braxton’s debut in the new millennium. After releasing a few mixtapes, Teedra is now back on the scene as part of Rick Ross’s Maybach Music collective. Eh, I’m not yet sold on that partnership; until they prove me wrong I’ll be rocking Complex Simplicity. If you’re a fan of 90s R&B, this is a must-have.
