The Business of Natural Hair

Angela Carter’s natural hair journey had a somewhat atypical beginning.

“When I went natural, I didn’t know that’s what I was doing,” Carter said. “I stopped relaxing my hair in 2006 because of scalp irritation and breakage. I started wearing twist extensions I did myself. It wasn’t until I began to notice other women were wearing the natural hair styles, that I realized I had gone natural unknowingly.”

Most women who sport natural hair know that while they may not be spending money on  relaxers any longer, natural hair care products can be just as pricey. Fed up with the high  costs of these products, in October of 2010 Carter decided she would begin creating  her own.

“I began looking up the ingredients in the products I was using, and checking out YouTube,”  Carter said. “I realized everything I needed to take care of my hair had already been provided f or me by nature and were as close as my kitchen and local grocery store.”

Soon Carter began receiving compliments on her hair and people wanted to know where they  could find the products she was using. After several family members tried and loved the  products and at her sister-in-law’s suggestion, Carter began to consider selling her products.  “After praying about it, I got my answer,” Carter said. She started advertising via word-of-  mouth and Facebook and giving out free samples. Her Birmingham-based business, Angela’s K.I.S.S. All Natural  Hair & Skin Products, was born.

  1. Interesting! I love reading about other creative/talented people in this city. Although I am happily rockin’ a relaxer, I do use natural products & enjoyed reading this post. Who knew that all natural preservatives existed?!
