Flashback Friday: Dido & Keith Sweat

It’s been a long, long week and Independence Day weekend is almost here! This is how we celebrate at Georgia Mae.

Here’s what Javacia is listening to:

Dido, No Angel (1999)

Jai said: Many of you may only know Dido as the woman behind the sorrowful voice in the Eminem hit “Stan”. But that haunting hook is actually a sample of Dido’s “Thank You” from her debut album No Angel and, ironically, “Thank You” has a somewhat uplifting message of love getting you through the rough times of life. That’s not the case for the rest of the album, which is full of laments of love lost. In spite of that (or maybe because of that) No Angel was a favorite of mine in college and you’d often hear this album on repeat in my dorm room on any given Saturday afternoon. If you like what you hear, I highly recommend her follow-up album, Life for Rent, as well.

What’s on Edward’s playlist?:

Keith Sweat (1996)

Edd said: Oh, don’t look at me like that, you KNEW this was coming. Before those of you who had a cool glass of Hateraide this morning start ranting, journey back with me to ’96. Keith was known as the king of New Jack Swing, the uptempo genre of R&B that dominated the late ’80s and early ’90s. Most of the stalwarts of that era were unable to transition into a more modern sound but Keith had no problem exploring his soulful side. What resulted were some of the most classic R&B songs of the decade. Even the most jaded Keith hater will begrudgingly admit that this album’s singles are among his best work.

Stop fooling yourself. You love this album. You know I do!
