Edd Watches Pixar: Luca
I’m a grown man who hasn’t seen most of the Pixar movies that people are obsessed with, but I was challenged to check ’em all out and share my thoughts. Join me as I watch ’em all one by one – see if I buy into the hype.
Movie No. 24: Luca (2021)
I’m taking it back! Pixar time!
During the Dreaded Summer of 2020, I realized that I hadn’t watched 95% of the beloved Pixar movies. So I decided to dive in, watch ‘em all, and share my thoughts right here.
I’m sure some of y’all remember this – half of you still haven’t forgiven me for saying that I enjoyed A Bugs Live more than Toy Story 1.
Anyway, I haven’t watched any Pixar since 2020’s Soul so let’s catch up with Luca.
I’m pretty sure the reason I forgot about Pixar is because this movie came out and I didn’t hear one thing about it. After watching it, I think I know why.
First off, I might be a little biased on this one because The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie ever – and YES, that means I like it more than Lion King. Look, y’all are the same folks who think Drake is a great artist and that okra tastes good so I’ll hear none of your judgement, thank you very much.
Luca is basically The Little Mermaid minus the 1 percenter vibes: A fish kid obsessed with random junk we throw in the ocean goes to the surface to cosplay as a human. Trust me, Luca, you ain’t missing nothing – the human world is filled with nothing but bills, ugly sneakers that cost a fortune and problematic rappers. It’s ghetto up here, homie, stay in the sea.
Luca and his boy hang out with a human family, learn a lesson about being true to yourself, his parents realize they can’t be so overprotective, grandma says funny stuff, the dumb bully gets beat up, yadda yadda, the end.
It’s surprisingly straightforward for Pixar, almost to a fault. Besides the cultural ties to Italy we don’t get the usual deep dives on societal issues, no Easter eggs for adults, nope. It just feels like your standard Disney kiddie story about fitting in.
It’s not bad at all, though. It’s a fun time with great animation and likable characters. And Luca being stuck between his human bestie and fish bro while hiding parts of his true self from both is well done. But I doubt I’ll watch it again – and I assume no one else did since I haven’t heard a soul talk about it.
I enjoyed this but it barely feels like a Pixar movie (and I’ll refrain from making “fish out of water” jokes because I have STANDARDS). With a few more layers this would have been doper. Definitely needed more squid sorceresses with great singing voices, though. We stan Ursula.
