Flashback Friday: LL Cool J and Common
Playa, what a tumultuous week in music. MGK trying to go to war with Eminem, Nas airing dirty laundry with his ex Kelis, EVERYBODY SO MAD. This Friday, we try to bring the love back.
LL Cool J, Bigger and Deffer (1987)
If you know rap like I know rap, the SECOND you hear this beat drop you immediately say:
When I’m alone in my room
Sometimes I stare at the wall
And in the back of my mind
I hear my conscience call
Telling me I need a girl who’s as sweet as a dove
For the first time in my life, I see I need love
Now THAT is a hip-hop classic, and LL’s Bigger and Deffer album is one of his career standouts.

Common, Like Water for Chocolate (2000)
Like Water for Chocolate is the crown jewel of Common’s discography and nothing burns brighter than “The Light,” one of the best odes to black love ever recorded. Of course, this is far from a one-track album. Like Water for Chocolate was way ahead of its time – it’s very culturally relevant for today’s times.
