Flashback Friday: Pharrell and AZ

Thanks to all of you for showing love to this week’s feature, “Why 2006 was Hip-Hop & R&B’s Last Landmark Year.”

If you haven’t read it yet, duh, do that right now.

In the spirit of that great year, let’s look at a couple of overlooked albums from that era.

in my mind

Pharrell, In My Mind (2006)

P’s solo studio debut landed with mixed reviews in 2006 – while by no means bad, In My Mind just didn’t live up to the massive hype that swirled around arguably the industry’s biggest producer. Look beyond the hype, though, and you’ll find a pretty strong release that remains a good listen even today.

“That Girl,” featuring Snoop Dogg and Charlie Wilson

“Can I Have It Like That,” featuring Gwen Stefani

the format

AZ, The Format (2006)

There’s really no such thing as a bad AZ song. Sosa’s sixth solo LP continues his longtime trend of quality, yet perpetually overlooked hip-hop.

“Rise and Fall,” featuring Little Brother

“Animal”
