New Music: Janet Jackson, “No Sleeep”
As a crotchety, crusty fan of 90s music, nothing warms my stony heart more than a veteran returning to the game to show these young’ns how it’s done.
Last month, industry icon Janet Jackson announced plans for a world tour and new album under her Rhythm Nation Records label. Today, we finally get the first single, “No Sleeep,” which reminds us that no one does seductive music like Ms. Jackson.
Produced by longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, “No Sleeep” is what dreams are made of — a midtempo burner that slinks into to your bedroom and increases the intensity with each passing moment. Knowing Janet, that extra “e” in the title is for “erotic.”
Like a true vet, Janet wisely sticks to her lane with “No Sleeep” — it’s pretty easy to reclaim the throne when it’s been vacant for so long. If the rest of her new album, Conversations in a Cafe, is this strong, sign me up.
