Listen Up: Jay Floyd, “Misery”

These days, it’s hard for hip hop artists to convey emotion.

No, I’m not talking about random screaming on tracks or the flimsy attempts at introspection some artists bring.

I mean, true, heartfelt, soul-shaking emotion. Those are the tracks we relate to. And they’re becoming a lost art.

No worries, Jay Floyd is bringing raw emotion back to the game.

Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Jay Floyd is an emcee and spoken word performance artist who infuses his aggressive lyrics with a rock edge. His album, Misery Love’s Co., is rooted in passion and soul. My favorite track is “Misery,” which ties his mother’s harsh realities of the segregated South to the struggles he confronts today. It’s not whiny and preachy, it’s defiant and confident.

In a world filled with strife, it’s just the outlet listeners need.

More than that – it’s what rap needs.
