Listen Up: The Boom!Box.Ruler, The Lotus
Few musical sounds are as timeless as soul. But sadly, in today’s musical climate, soul is practically reserved for sleepy Sunday afternoons at your grandma’s house.
Thankfully, a new generation of musicians are modernizing that classic sound.
Enter The BoomBoxRuler. The 33-year-old Bronx native was raised in a musical family – his great uncles and aunts were musicians. Those roots run deep and have infused his work with jazz, soul, funk, bossa nova, and hip hop. That range of influences is essentially the evolution of black music, and The Lotus, BBR’s instrumental project, is the best of all those worlds.
Equally soothing and stimulating, The Lotus is an audio history of where music has been and we’re it’s going. Soul just got a new savior.
Check out one of my favorites from the project below.
