Birmingbelle of the Week: Nancy Stricklin

Birmingham-based filmmaker Nancy Stricklin has successfully created three short films tackling comedy, drama, and even complicated family issues. But now she’s ready to do more. Nancy is currently working on her debut feature film Beautiful Disaster

Beautiful Disaster is a feature film about a young, single woman living a lie because she refuses to deal with past hurts and thinks hurting and using others to get everything she wants, will make the pain go away, only to find that it just makes things worse and jeopardizes the life she really wants,” Nancy explained.

We had a chat with Nancy recently about her latest project and Birmingham’s independent film scene.

What inspired this film?

Throughout life I’ve encountered the most interesting people and I’ve always wanted the ability to know how they became who they are: their personality, mindset, and views of the world and relationships. We all have a story and I’ve found that many people I encounter are unhappy and repeatedly make the same, obvious mistakes. And most times, it’s because they don’t deal with issues from their past, that have formed their present state and situations. So this movie shows the domino effect of how things happen and build upon each other when life changing issues are not addressed and how they affect everyone we come in contact with. It can also cause people to miss out the things they really desire and need.

Do you believe Birmingham is a good place for filmmakers?

Although the industry is very low key here, there are many positive elements about being a filmmaker in Birmingham: locations, fees, availability of experienced workers and ease to get things done in a timely, hassle free manner.
What do you love about Birmingham?

The amazing talent that’s here. I’ve meet so many talented creative minds here over the years and I’m just waiting for the rest of the world to discover them as well.
What would you change about Birmingham?

I would increase the exposure of artists — painters, dancers, singers, filmmakers, actors, musicians, and so on — to the city and the rest of the world. We are quietly wealthy in the area of amazing talent and it just seems like we are a secret that has been kept too long.
