She Get It From Her Mama
In celebration of Mother’s Day folks have been posting photos of their mommies as their Facebook profile pictures. I couldn’t decide on just one so I made an “I Heart My Mommy” album of some of my favorite photos of her. Looking over the album I realize that each picture tells an important story or symbolizes something special about my relationship with my mom.
My mom and I are very different in many ways, but there’s no denying I’m her daughter. Just look at us. We’re practically twins! This photo reminds me to cherish, honor, and make the most of the things she’s passed on to me, such as her loving spirit.
This picture was taken at one of our family cookouts, at which she’s always the life of the party. This picture reminds me that sometimes I need to just relax and enjoy life just as my mama does.
Here is my mom (right) with her sister and my favorite aunt Angie. Yes, this picture is hilarious, but it’s actually a snapshot of history. They were in Eutaw, Alabama traveling with my grandmother and others who were doing work with the Civil Rights Movement. Their goal in Eutaw at the time was get access to public pools for blacks. It worked. Growing up hearing my mother tell stories of how she was part of so many historic moments, moments that have allowed me to enjoy the freedoms I have now despite my race, really encouraged me to stand up for what I believe in and be a movement of my own, a movement that’s all about empowering women.
Okay, so there’s not really a story with this picture, it’s just an awesome photo and another opportunity to check out my mom’s amazing glasses!
Happy Mother’s Day, mommy. I love you!
we need to get you in a pair of those glasses!
Long hair is in the family.
