Edd’s MANtra: A Star Is Born?
Watch out, those Smiths are about to cram another of their spawn down our throats.
Will and Jada’s boy Jaden just kicked his way into our hearts in The Karate Kid remake. Or so I heard – I refused to see it. I hate when people toy with my childhood memories. Now we have to make room for Willow.
A couple of days ago, a friend and avid reader (what up, Londay!) shared a video of Willow’s new song, “Whip My Hair.” She loved it. I was nonplussed – which is about as excited as I get about most new artists these days. It wasn’t horrible, despite sounding EXACTLY like a Rihanna tune (and we know all know how I feel about her). And I can’t get hyped about a song that encourages kids to fling their hair around. You used to get in trouble for that in the hood. You wanna upset a black woman? Make her comb a little girl’s hair twice in one day.
But the song is catchy, I’ll give it that – and that’s all you need these days.
Well, Jay-Z was impressed. Over at xxlmag.com it was announced that Willow is the newest addition to Jay’s Roc Nation roster.
Everyone is predicting big things for the child, but I only have two words – SLOW DOWN. Today’s artists never get a chance to mature. They have a little buzz, get thrust into the spotlight with sales expectations they can’t possibly reach, then ridiculed when they fall short.

Aww, it’ll be OK, Drake.
Willow needs time to grow and find herself. Looking and sounding like a Rihanna clone won’t get her very far. Hopefully her team can help her become her own woman. Or little girl. In the meantime, prepare yourself to hear this silly song ad nauseum for eight months. Pre-teens everywhere will be suffering from whiplash and broken necks.
Do you think Willow has the makings of a star?
I love you Ed, but you are such a hater at times, lol. I think Will and Jada are doing an excellent job raising their children. They seem to be grounded, respectful, and seem to know exactly what they want at a young age. What’s wrong with that?! I’m not saying she is going to win a grammy for this song, but I’m not going to lie, it’s going to be a banger. One thing is for sure, I would rather hear her 7 days a week vs. the Bieber. I am not a Rihanna fan, and I really didnt get that vibe. I will say that Jay-Z is a BUSINESS, man….(lol) but really he heard the track before he even knew she was 9 and who she was. He was blown away. She is 9 so her voice is still developing but she isnt terrible. Hell, I hear worse from people on the radio now! So I say don’t hate, give her a chance. What’s wrong with having a successful black power couple having successful black productive children?? I mean ask yourself that, b/c 9 times out of 10 we all would have something to say if she said she wanted to be the next Kim Kardashian…ooops Montana Fishburne already went there…..just sayin!
SN: Go watch Karate Kid and get over it! It was a suprisngly good movie!
I will give her props for singing about something kids can relate to. I’m tired of teenagers pretending to be Bloods.
I LOVE Will and Jada, but that little Jaden comes off as a bit cocky in interviews and this Willow song is quite annoying. I’m not above listening to ridiculous music if it makes me dance (I’m a big BEP fan, for example) so perhaps this tune will grow on me, but as for now I’ll pass. I hope as she matures as an artist she will develop a more original sound, because right now she sounds EXACTLY like Rihanna (or maybe Rihanna on helium) and I don’t even dislike Rih Rih like my husband does.
SN: I don’t care what anyone says, I love me some Justin Bieber. That little boy can sing!
