Seven-year-old Heather McNamara was expected to be discharged from a New York hospital today after a high-risk operation last month in which doctors removed six of her vital organs so they could take out a baseball-sized tumor in her abdomen. The marathon operation was held Feb. 6 and lasted 23 hours. It was the first of its kind in a child and the second in the world.

Bernard Madoff, the disgraced financier who allegedly ran a $50 billion Ponzi scheme is expected to plead guilty this week to 11 felony charges including securities fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and perjury. There is a chance 70-year-old Madoff could face life in prison. ABC News

Five Guantanamo prisoners accused in the September 11, 2001, terror attacks on the U.S. staunchly defended their actions, calling the operation “blessed” and “great” and the accusations against them “badges of honor.” The six-page response from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who plotted the attacks, and four others calls the United States “the terrorist country number one in the world.” CNN
