Flashback Friday: Average White Band and Hot Chocolate

Soul In Stereo is the only (sane) spot you’ll find on the Web that advocates living in the past.

That’s because some phenomenal music dwells there.

My man @MaximusShelby on Twitter shared these gems. If you’re not familiar with these bands, step your game up. They build the foundation that R&B rests on today.

Average White Band, Soul Searching (1976)

If you don’t recognize AWB by name, I know you’ll recognize their sound. They’re one of the most sampled groups of all time – everyone from Nas to Tribe Called Quest to Puffy to NWA have borrowed their melodies. In fact, “Rich is Gangsta,” one the few tracks I liked from Rick Ross’ new album, samples this album’s title track. Believe it or not, AWB are architects of hip hop.

Hot Chocolate, The Very Best of Hot Chocolate (1987)

Here’s another group you may not recognize by name but I guarantee you know their signature hit “You Sexy Thing.” It’s just not a fast-food jingle, young’ns, it’s the product of a British pop band that dominated the ’70s and had hits in the ’80s as well. Here’s some of their best.
