OutKast, Aquemini (1998)


Edd said: I’ve written countless album reviews on this blog, but I’ve never given an album a 5-star rating. It’s certainly not that I’m incapable of handing out that designation – but y’all know how picky I can be. But if Aquemini was released 10 years later, it unquestionably would have received my top honor. By 1998, Andre 3000 and Big Boi were already considered two of rap’s top lyricists, but when Aquemini dropped, it was no longer a consideration, it was fact. The duo stayed true to their Southern roots while experimenting with a new sound, creating the most forward-thinking album I had ever heard. This was the album that upgraded them from mere rappers to true innovators. Stankonia and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below later brought them mainstream success but Aquemini was a game-changer.
