Flashback Friday: Tweet and Miles Davis

Another week done, another reason to celebrate with good music.


Georgia Mae’s grumpy music guru Edward shares this one:

Tweet, Southern Hummingbird (2002)


Edd said: April 2, 2002. I stood in Best Buy, trying to decide if I’d buy the debut album of “the Princess of R&B” Ashanti or the debut of Missy Elliott protege Tweet. Yeah, in 2011 we know that decision is a no-brainer but I was pretty torn at the time. I wimped out and purchased both. While Ashanti’s disc is now my dog’s Frisbee, Southern Hummingbird still gets plenty of rotation. Because of input from Timbaland and Missy, critics expected Tweet to be Aaliyah Version 2.0, but her smoky, acoustic-heavy album was definitely in its own lane. It definitely leans more toward Neo-Soul than pop. Southern Hummingbird is one of the few albums that I have grown to love more and more over the years, making it one of my favorite debuts ever. I can’t say the same for poor Ashanti’s debut.

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue (1997 reissue)


Javacia said: My freshman year of college I took an art appreciation class, not for the easy A like everyone else, but because I’d graduated from a performing arts high school and I thought this class would remind me of the good ol’ days. One day in class one of the instructors played Miles Davis’ “So What.” I’d never heard that song before but I fell in love. I decided at that moment I could not live without owning the album “Kind of Blue.” I bummed a ride to the mall, bought the CD, and eventually spent way too much of my scholarship money buying several other Davis albums. To this day I wrestle with trying to describe his music and the way it makes me feel. I simply can’t do it. So I’ll let the music speak for itself.
