Flashback Friday: Soul II Soul and Phyllis Hyman
I don’t know about you, but I’m in the mood for some ’80s soul. Here’s what’s poppin this fine Friday.
Soul II Soul, Club Classics Vol. 1 (1989)
If you have a pulse and at least one functioning ear, I’m willing to bet you’re familiar with at least one or two Soul II Soul singles. But there’s more where those came from – Soul II Soul’s debut album is an insanely addictive club record, crammed with the dance hits that made them famous. The album is definitely worth a spin.

Phyllis Hyman, Living All Alone (1986)
Living All Alone may be Hyman’s seventh album, but this was my introduction to her music – and that otherworldly voice she possesses. The title track became one of her signature hits and a true showcase of her vocal prowess. Sadly, a decade later she took her own life but this album remains a strong testament to her legacy.
