FlashBLACK FRIDAY: Black Milk and Black Sheep

If you’re just rising from your Thanksgiving coma — or rising from your emergency room bed after being trampled in Best Buy — I bet you’re in the mood for some good music.

Once a year, our Flashback Friday column becomes FlashBLACK FRIDAY. Before you crank up those Christmas carols, get a taste of these bangers.

Black Milk, Popular Demand (2007)

In my view, Black Milk is the most underrated producer in hip hop history. Yes, HISTORY. He can do it all, from soul beats to boom bap to dizzying electronic sounds. He’s also a solid rapper as well. Black’s 2007 album is probably the best of the bunch — a well-rounded showcase of entertaining lyricism and head-nodding production.

Black Sheep, A Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing (1991)

Black Sheep is one of those highly influential hip-hop groups that seem to have been lost in the mists of time. Dres and Mista Lawnge were part of the Native Tongues collective, which included A Tribe Called Quest, the Jungle Brothers and De La Soul — pretty elite company. The duo possessed a wit that was really unique at the time, which helped etch their debut album, A Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing, into hip-hop history.
