Edd’s MANtra: Breaking Up Is Hard to Do

Man, first the Fugees break up, and now this, from RollingStone.com:

Nas and Kelis are splitting.

Kelis, who is seven months pregnant with their first child together, cited “irreconcilable differences” in the filed divorce papers.

The two met at the 2002 MTV VMAs and were married in 2003.

Actually, I’m pretty sure Nas and Kelis married around 2005, not ’03 – not that I’d dare to question the brain trust at Rolling Stone. And in case there were any lingering doubts, I saw this weekend that Vibe has posted a copy of their divorce papers, TMZ style. Classy.

Anyway, this news depressed me. As a reformed playa turned married man, I hate to hear about divorce. Word is Kelis accused Nas of creepin’ around and abusive language, which is how ALL these celebrity marriages end. That’s a shame, especially since Kelis is about to give birth in a couple of months. And I bet Nas is feeling pretty stupid about getting that big ol’ Kelis tattoo.

I guess all eyes are now on Hov and Bey.

Are there any marriages in the music industry that have stood the test of time? The only one I can think of is R&B songbirds Kenny Lattimore and Chante Moore. They’ve been together nearly 10 years now. Wonder what their secret is?

Other than refraining from creepin’ and beatin’ each other, that is.

What do you think celebs need to do to have lasting marriages?

  1. This makes me so sad. Nas and Kelis were one of my favorite celeb couples, ranked right up there with Will and Jada. I don’t know what celebs should do to make their marriages last. Since I’m just plain regular folk I have no idea what they have to go through, but I don’t like how famous people (and it’s usually the men) say their partner should expect and accept infidelity because of who they are. That really pisses me off and I really hope Nas isn’t one of those guys. Also verbally abusing your partner does not make you look tough. It makes you lame.

  2. as sad at this may sound marriage doesnt mean anything anymore. and i dont think celebs are the only ones that think a woman should accept infidelity. i work around a million men and lots of regular men think the same way.

but anyway they need JESUS LOL!

  3. Yeah this sucks, I was rootin for them! I have a feeling they’ll end up back together tho..I have no clue what celebrity couples can do to make it work either as it seems hard enough for regular folk to make it. But I think those who can make it last seem to somehow keep most of their private life..umm, private?
