Flashback Friday: Funkmaster Flex and Tony! Toni! Tone!

Welcome to 2016! I’m sure most of y’all left your sobriety back in 2015 but it’s all good — I dragged a few hot ’90s albums with me through the time machine. Check these out.

Funkmaster Flex, The Mix Tape, Vol. 2 (1997)

Let’s go back to 1997, when mixtapes weren’t shoddy attempts at “free albums.”  Back then, they were a chance for established artists to debut new material or for new artists to introduce themselves to the rap world. Funk Flex’s Mix Tape was actually that, a collection of freestyles and previously released songs mixed by the maestro himself. That’s where the “mix” in mixtape comes from, after all. My man Nick Birdsong reminded me how great Flex’s ’97 collection was, filled with memorable freestyles.

Jennifer drops this gem off, saying it’s “One of the best albums ever recorded. I remember being a kid when it came out and ordering it from Columbia House on the 20 Cd’s for $1 deal. One of the few albums you can let ride from start to finish! Perfect CD to pop in to clean the house or hit the road!”
