25 Songs of Christmas, The Treacherous Three, Xmas Rap
Here at Soul In Stereo, we’re counting down to Christmas by featuring our favorite holiday tracks. Here’s today’s Christmas classic:
Let’s take a moment to applaud Chris Carter for nominating this gem.
The Treacherous Three (which often seemed to include way more than three people) just might be the first major rap posse. In 1984, L.A. Sunshine, Special K and the incomparable Kool Moe Dee linked up for a holiday cut that had much more edge than Kurtis Blow’s celebratory “Christmas Rappin’.” This isn’t all about partying and presents – these guys were talking about how tough it was to enjoy the holidays when you can’t pay the rent. But instead of whining, they played their strife up for laughs, like saying that they’d have to cook up Santa’s reindeer for Christmas dinner. They’re smiling through their troubles.
It’s a pretty fun song with a powerful message. Ah, I miss classic hip-hop.
