25 Songs of Christmas: The Temptations, Silent Night

Here at Soul In Stereo, we’re counting down to Christmas by featuring our favorite holiday tracks. Here’s today’s Christmas classic:

On Thanksgiving Day, after the family finished gorging itself on heaping helpings of soul food, my father-in-law shuffled over to his CD player. And these were the first words that emerged:

‘Twas the night before Christmas

And all through the house
Not a creature was stirring,

Not even a mouse….

You can’t legally celebrate Christmas until you hear those words. Like putting hamhocks in your collard green, it’s required by federal soul law.

I can’t think of a Christmas song more beloved than this one. Many consider it to be THE definitive Christmas song and it’s hard to argue that point. Sure, it ain’t perfect (I’ve already blogged about the ridiculous lyrics) but it’s so warm and familiar, like your mom’s dressing.

Guess you can tell I’m ready for Christmas dinner, huh? And like that customary meal, The Temptations make the holidays complete.
