Edd Watches Pixar: The Incredibles Review
I’m a grown man who hasn’t seen most of the Pixar movies that people are obsessed with, but I was challenged to check ’em all out and share my thoughts. Join me as I watch ’em all one by one – see if I buy into the hype.
Movie No 6: The Incredibles (2004)
Shout out to my man Tom, I watched this one at his place sometime in the mid 00s. At the time, I considered it one of the best superhero movies I’d ever seen.
Marvel’s got y’all so spoiled. It’s only been in the past decade that superhero films have been respected for nuanced storytelling. Even circa 2004, most superhero films were as shallow as that fish tank in Finding Nemo.
Look at me calling back to previous movies. I’m all in on this Pixar thing, playas.
Since I hadn’t seen this one since the halcyon days of the Bush Administration, my main question was this: Does this thing hold up in the era of Black Panthers and Infinity Wars?
YUP.
Like the best Pixar movies I’ve seen (so far) the movie excels when it showcases its surprisingly deep layers – heroes getting sued for stopping suicide attempts, families forced into hiding so they have to live out their Avengers fantasies on the low, scorned stans turned supervillains, it’s pretty smart stuff.
What’s not smart is Mr. Incredible’s double life. New cars, fancy new suits, suddenly getting in shape – either he was moving work on block or found a sugar momma. It took way too long for Elastigirl to peep game. Frozone’s wife would have shut that down IMMEDIATELY. Also, imagine loaning your friend a whole airplane and it gets blown up. I would have sued the Incredibles back into witness protection.
It’s utterly amazing that we have never had a competent Fantastic Four movie in this HISTORY OF THIS PLANET yet The Incredibles gets pretty much everything right, complete with fake Mole Man at the end of the film. Even the villain Syndrome is properly menacing and has a decent evil plan, he just made his robots too smart for their own good.
My only complaint was those whiny kids. They eventually grew on me but MAN they were ultra annoying through most of the film. Also, has it been confirmed that Edna is based off the short woman from NCIS? The resemblance is pretty insane. The Incredibles bout to get sued AGAIN – these folks stay catching cases.
I might be a bit biased since the movie’s half Marvel/half Bond aesthetic speaks to my soul but it still stands as one of the best superhero films ever to do it. Marvel or DC, live action or animated, doesn’t matter. This one is still near the top of the heap.
By the way, Mr. Incredible’s OG costume > the red and black family costume. The real ones know it’s still #NoCapes, though.

… LORD HELP. CARS. Didn’t y’all say that one was trash? At least you won’t complain when I say A Bug’s Life is better this time.
