Edd Watches Pixar: Toy Story 2 Review

I’m a grown man who hasn’t seen most of the Pixar movies that people are obsessed with, but I was challenged to check ’em all out and share my thoughts. Join me as I watch ’em all one by one – see if I buy into the hype.

Movie No. 3: Toy Story 2 (1999)

Hey, I’ve seen this one before! I watched this and Brave a few years ago on the Disney channel, back when Girl Meets World was a thing.

Remember Girl Meets World? It was all good until they went with the dumb Riley/Lucas/Maya love triangle. And you thought Jada/Will/August Alsina was unnecessary.

ANYWAY

While I enjoyed Toy Story 1 I didn’t think it was the flawless slice of nostalgia others remember it being. Blame my old, jaded eyes I guess but I thought the story was a little formulaic, basically the time tested “popular guy gets jealous of more popular guy, guys go on adventure and becomes friends in the end yay.”

Like compact discs and fruit gushers, I’m sure it was cutting edge in 95. Today, though, eh, it’s pretty standard.

Toy Story 2 wisely spent more time character building, transforming Woody (who was honestly quite annoying in TS1) into a much more likable hero. It was also cool to see the crew get in on the action. Buuuuuuuuut, that action was a little uneven. I wanted to see more of the gang thirsting over the Barbie pool party and Buzz fighting his doppelganger and less of Woody goofing off with the #YeeHawAgenda. That “When Somebody Loved Me” sequence though, WHEW. Pixar loves ripping your heart out and DDT’ing in through the floor.

And hey, Girl Woody was here! I knew I didn’t make her up.

Once again the parents in this series baffle me. If some weirdo collector dude wanted to buy one of my random Transformers for $50 bucks at a yard sale, best believe my mom would sell me out. She’d probably take him in the house and raffle off everything in my bedroom.

This was another dope film that speaks well to inevitable change that comes with growing up. I’m constantly surprised at how well they handle such mature themes. Pixar is three for three so far.

4 stars out of 5

Edd’s faves:

A Bug’s Life
Toy Story
**Toy Story 2**

A Bug’s Life is still my No. 1 for now. THERE WILL BE RIOTING IN THE COMMENTS.

Next up is Monster’s Inc. Thanks to the power of gifs, I know a giant blue furball will hug a tiny little girl at some point in this movie. That’s all I got.
