You don’t miss what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone

Lately, I’ve been a brat. I’ve been whining, a lot, about how I want nicer things: a nicer home, a nicer car, and nicer vacations. I work hard, very hard, and I believe I deserve these things. My husband keeps reminding me of the importance of being thankful for what you have and I know he’s right. But when he says things like, “The car you have now is fine,” I always reply, “says the person with the shiny, sporty coupe.”

Last week Edd was out of town so I had the pleasure of zipping around town in his Scion TC leaving my boring sedan parked in front of our apartment. Saturday, after spending some time at  a local health fair and a book fair to promote Walk for Lupus Now Birmingham, I pulled up to my apartment complex only to find my Chevy Cavalier, my CeCe as I like to call her, missing her bumper and smashed between four other cars. Some idiot managed to nearly destroy five parked cars and …wait for it… she has no insurance. Hours later I had to watch a tow truck take away my CeCe Yesterday the shop called to tell me the car is most likely totaled.

Obviously, I sure would love to have my boring sedan right now.

This experience has shown me just how much of a brat I’ve been. I remember when I drove a Geo Metro that didn’t even have a tape player. I loved that car! It was a source of pride for me because I worked and saved all summer to buy it. I didn’t care that the engine sounded like a lawnmower; it was all mine and that was enough. Now that I’m older, now that I have a career and a savings account, I seem to have developed this sense of entitlement, something I promised myself I’d never do.

So this is for you CeCe. I’ll miss you, girl.

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your car Jai. And as for the lady who has no insurance, WTH? Who doesn’t have car insurance in this day and age?? I hope you get a nice new car that you will enjoy and that won’t sink you with a crazy payment.

  2. So my first car was a red Geo Metro, which broke down on my way to college in Georgia. My second (and third) cars were Cavaliers as well. Both were totaled. I can relate to all your cars and the issues you’ve had with them. You’ll get double for your trouble though. It’ll work out – it always does.

  3. My Geo was red too! Thanks for the encouragement.

  4. I remember GeGe and the lawnmower motor. Remember I could her you coming back to Somerville when you were a mile away. LOL!

I’m sure youll get something even nicer this time. And that idiot will be riding on the MAX while you are cruising in your new wheels!
